Buyer's guide

How to compare web design quotes

The cheapest web design quote is not always the best value. To compare quotes fairly, send every supplier the same brief, then check scope, what you will own, and the ongoing costs after launch.

Send one brief, get quotes

1. Write one brief and send it to everyone

Quotes only compare fairly when every supplier prices the same thing. List your pages, features (bookings, shop, forms), who supplies the words and photos, your budget range and deadline. Our quote form asks for exactly these details so each professional starts from the same brief.

2. Compare scope line by line

Check the number of pages, templates or custom design, mobile layouts, contact forms, basic SEO set-up, and how many rounds of changes are included. A cheaper quote often simply covers less.

3. Check the deliverables you will own

Confirm you will own the domain, the website files and the logins, and that the site is handed over with training or written notes. Ask what happens if you later move to another provider.

4. Add up the ongoing costs

The build price is rarely the whole cost. Hosting (listed here from £15/month), maintenance (from £79/month) and later content changes (from £60/hour) are usually separate. Compare the first-year total, not just the headline figure.

5. Ask each supplier the same questions

Use the question list below and note the answers side by side.

Indicative UK starting budgets, not fixed quotes or UK-wide averages. Each starting price covers a limited brief, not every feature listed. Confirm VAT treatment, scope and any third-party charges in your written quote. Hosting and maintenance are separate monthly charges; other services are one-off unless priced per hour.

Questions to ask every supplier

  • Which pages and features are included, and what would count as extra?
  • How many rounds of design changes are included?
  • Who writes the copy and supplies images?
  • What are the payment stages, and is VAT added?
  • What is the timeline, and what do you need from me to keep to it?
  • Is hosting, maintenance or support included after launch, and for how long?
  • Will I own the domain, website and all logins?
  • Can I see live websites you have built for similar businesses?

Common questions

How many web design quotes should I get?

Two or three comparable quotes is usually enough to see a fair price range. When you send a brief through Web Design Quotes, it may be shared with up to three suitable professionals.

Why do web design quotes vary so much?

Suppliers often price different scopes: template versus custom design, who writes content, how many revisions, and whether hosting or support is bundled. Comparing line by line usually explains most of the gap.

Are the prices on this site UK averages?

No. Prices shown on Web Design Quotes are the site's own published starting prices for a limited scope, not UK market averages or fixed packages. Your quote depends on your brief.
